Legacy Business Recognition

Early this year, we received notice that the City of Steamboat Springs and Main Street Steamboat recognized Better Tomorrow as an official Legacy Business.

Though we’ve only been in our current form since 2021, our mission-driven work began in 1983. And while the work that started it all has its most direct link to services provided today by Advocates of Routt County, all of our programs - and indeed, Better Tomorrow itself - owe our existence to the hard work and dedication that started in our valley and across the state in the early 1980s.

Dedicated members of our community, led by Diane Moore, began what’s now known as Advocates of Routt County in response to the growing awareness that people across our community needed to know that their friends and neighbors were here to support them. Since then, we (and those who came before us, known over time as Advocates Against Battering and Abuse and Advocates Building Peaceful Communities) have:

  • obtained and run a local, confidential shelter for those seeking safety,

  • continuously operated a 24/7/365 SAFEline staffed by local, trained volunteers and staff,

  • educated the community’s school-aged youth on consent, boundaries, and healthy relationships,

  • expanded housing offerings to include transitional housing as a response to the local growing housing crisis,

  • provided direct assistance to those in need, and

  • so, so much more…

Advocates was called - in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic - to collaborate with law enforcement, the District Attorney’s office, medical and mental health providers, and others, to come to the table and discuss the possibility of establishing a Child Advocacy Center in the 14th Judicial District (Routt, Moffat, and Grand Counties). As a result of those meetings, Brighter World Child Advocacy Center was established in 2021, and when set up as a sibling program to Advocates of Routt County, we officially reorganized as Better Tomorrow.

Better Tomorrow now serves as the nonprofit home of four programs - Advocates of Routt County, Brighter World Child Advocacy Center, COMMA Projects, and Queer Futures. And while each Program pursues its own distinct Mission and Vision, they all share administrative supports provided by the Better Tomorrow team. We know that by working alongside one another we can continue to serve each Program’s mission more effectively while allowing the flexibility to closely collaborate with one another when called for. Because of our shared supports, we are truly Stronger Together.
